Maxwell Johnson is a New York based director and writer from southern Illinois.

Maxwell graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with an undergraduate degree in Film & TV production. His short film Taking Time premiered at the Aperture International Student Film Festival. In 2025, Maxwell was selected by Jon Watts to partake in his directing workshop at NYU. Maxwell’s thesis film Choy, a docu-fiction starring acclaimed documentarian Christine Choy, is currently in post production and is set to hit the festival circuit by the end of the year.

In addition to his narrative work, Maxwell is an assistant director with experience working on productions both throughout the United States and abroad, with budgets upwards of $100k. Maxwell is open for freelance work and is excited to work with you on your next project.
